An Urban Dabali session on “Medieval Urbanism and Architectural Heritage of Mithila/Tirhut” was held on 29 May 2026 at Universal Engineering and Science College, Chakupat, Lalitpur. The program was jointly organized by the Centre for Integrated Urban Development (CIUD) and Helvetas Nepal.
The session began with welcome remarks from Mr. Sudarshan Rajbhandari, Program Director of CIUD, who introduced the Urban Dabali platform and highlighted the importance of discussing Nepal’s diverse urban and cultural heritage. He emphasized the need to bring lesser-known historical narratives into wider academic and public discussion.
The main presentation was delivered by Mr. Pawan Kumar Mallik, who shared insights on the medieval urbanism, fortified settlements, and architectural heritage of the Mithila/Tirhut region. Drawing on archaeological, historical, and cultural evidence, he discussed the region’s rich history and its role as an important center of trade, culture, and architectural development.
A significant part of the presentation focused on Simraungarh, one of the most important medieval urban centers in the region. Mr. Mallik highlighted archaeological findings related to forts, ponds, temples, and settlement remains, demonstrating the area’s historical and cultural significance. He also discussed the influence of the Karnata rulers and the broader connections between Mithila, Janakpur, and neighboring regions.
The presentation emphasized that despite its rich heritage, many important sites in the Mithila/Tirhut region remain under-researched and insufficiently documented. The need for greater research, documentation, conservation, and recognition of Madhesh’s heritage was highlighted throughout the session.
The presentation was followed by a discussion with Prof. Dr. Madan Kumar Rimal of Tribhuvan University, Mr. Prakash Darnal, Senior Archaeologist, and Mr. Rajesh Pariyar from the Department of Archaeology. The panel reflected on the importance of archaeological research, documentation, and heritage conservation, while also discussing the challenges faced in protecting historical sites.
During the open-floor discussion, participants raised questions regarding archaeological excavations, the documentation of medieval settlements, and the unique architectural features of Mithila. Discussions also highlighted the need for museums and interpretation centers to preserve and share historical knowledge, as well as the importance of increasing public awareness and community involvement in heritage conservation.
The session concluded with a shared understanding of the importance of preserving and promoting the architectural and cultural heritage of Mithila/Tirhut. Participants emphasized the need for continued research, stronger conservation efforts, and greater recognition of Madhesh’s historical contributions to Nepal’s cultural landscape.
